The Radiation Protection ALARA Specialist supports radiation protection programs at Palisades Nuclear Plant. Responsible for ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) planning, radiation work permits, dose tracking, source term reduction, radiological evaluations, and support of station radiation protection initiatives. Works closely with site personnel, Health Physics, and plant leadership to maintain regulatory compliance and minimize personnel radiation exposure.

 

Location: Covert, MI (On‑site)

 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Implement and maintain the Radiation Work Permit (RWP) Program.
  • Track and monitor collective radiation exposure for personnel and work activities.
  • Prepare and execute ALARA plans, including dose estimating, dose tracking, shielding evaluations, technology implementation, and source term reduction initiatives.
  • Recommend tooling improvements and work methods to reduce exposure and improve efficiencies.
  • Coordinate with Health Physics on dosimetry programs to ensure compliance with station procedures and regulatory requirements.
  • Implement and maintain area monitoring programs for higher-risk radiological activities.
  • Perform technical evaluations related to radiological source term, dosimetry, instrumentation requirements, and radioactive waste shipments.
  • Support procedure revisions, self-assessments, corrective action evaluations, performance indicators, and ALARA Committee presentations.
  • Partner with plant personnel to develop Radiation Work Permits and ALARA work plans.
  • Participate in the Emergency Response Organization (ERO) and maintain emergency response qualifications.

 

Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum 4 years of commercial nuclear or military nuclear experience.
  • Minimum 4 years of Radiation Protection experience required.
  • Strong technical knowledge of radiation protection programs and ALARA practices.
  • Understanding of nuclear generation principles and plant operations.
  • Experience with Sentinel Radiation Protection Management Program preferred.
  • Proficiency with standard computer and business software applications.
  • Ability to support emergency response requirements and maintain ERO qualifications.
  • ANSI (American National Standards Institute) qualification preferred
