Senior Staff Accountant – General Accounting (Energy Industry)

 Role Summary:

The Senior Staff Accountant supports the general ledger accounting processes within an energy company. This role ensures the accurate and timely preparation of financial statements, supports monthly and quarterly close, and ensures compliance with internal controls and external regulations. Energy-specific accounting standards may be part of the work.


 Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform and review journal entries for payroll activity, accruals, prepaids, the related account reconciliations, and variance analyses.
  • Measure record and track foreign currency translation impacts.
  • Balance intercompany activity monthly.
  • Assist in month-end, quarter-end, and year-end closing processes.
  • Maintain the general ledger in compliance with GAAP and company policy.
  • Prepare and analyze financial reports, including P&L statements and balance sheets.
  • Ensure compliance with SOX controls and internal audit requirements.
  • Collaborate with operational departments to capture accurate financial data.
  • Support audits (internal and external) and regulatory reporting.
  • Identify and implement process improvements for accounting procedures.
  • Stay updated on industry regulations, accounting standards, and energy sector trends.

 Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance (CPA preferred).
  • 3–7+ years of experience in accounting, preferably with energy or utilities exposure.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP; governmental accounting knowledge is a plus.
  • Experience with ERP systems (Kinetic, CaseWare).
  • Advanced Excel skills; experience with data visualization or BI tools is a bonus.

 Key Skills:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving ability.
  • High attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to communicate complex financial data clearly.
  • Understanding of fixed asset and project accounting (common in energy).
  • Knowledge of energy operations and cost accounting (fuel, generation, transmission, etc.)

 

Salary range: $90,000 – $130,000
