Mechanical Design Engineer I

The Mechanical Design Engineer – Technical Sponsor supports Holtec's Dry Fuel Storage and Transportation programs and serves as a key contributor to the design, development, fabrication, and implementation of nuclear and energy-related projects. The successful candidate will provide technical leadership, support cross-functional engineering and manufacturing teams, and ensure designs meet project requirements, industry standards, and quality expectations.

Primary Responsibilities:
- Review customer and internal specifications to determine design and technical requirements.
- Support the execution of engineering projects through integrated product development and engineering processes.
- Review designs for compliance with engineering principles, contractual requirements, and applicable industry codes and standards.
- Prepare, review, and approve design changes, engineering specifications, calculations, analyses, and technical drawings.
- Lead the development and review of concept designs and engineering documentation for mechanical equipment and systems.
- Oversee the preparation and review of detailed fabrication drawings used for manufacturing Holtec products.
- Develop technical specifications, purchase specifications, operating manuals, and maintenance documentation.
- Provide engineering support and technical resolutions for manufacturing deviations and fabrication issues.
- Collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, quality, and project teams to ensure successful project execution.
- Support compliance with quality assurance requirements, project schedules, and customer commitments.
- Mentor and assist design team members to promote accurate and timely completion of engineering work.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives and engineering best practices.
- Travel up to 20% as required to support projects and manufacturing activities.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or Nuclear Engineering.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience using CAD software to develop 3D models and detailed 2D engineering drawings.
- Strong understanding of mechanical design principles, including GD&T, tolerance stack-ups, interference checks, and engineering fits.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and mathematical skills.
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to produce accurate, high-quality engineering documentation.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and work independently with minimal supervision.
- Demonstrated leadership capability and willingness to take ownership of engineering assignments.
- Ability to travel periodically in support of project activities.
- Advanced degree (MS, PhD, or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering or Nuclear Engineering.
- Experience supporting nuclear industry projects.
- Knowledge of ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, AISC standards, AWS standards, and/or ACI Code requirements.
- Experience collaborating with manufacturers to develop designs and fabrication documentation.
- Experience with SmartPlant, SolidWorks, AutoCAD, and ANSYS software.
- Strong technical writing skills and experience preparing engineering reports and documentation.
- Proven ability to work effectively in cross-functional and collaborative engineering environments.
Compensation:
- Annual compensation based on skills and experience ranging from $90,000 to $105,000.
