Electrical Engineer II
Camden, NJ, US North Pittsburgh, PA, US Covert, MI, US Buchanan, NY, US
The Electrical Engineer II – Cable Routing & Analysis will support the design and development of electrical cable routing systems for Holtec's SMR-300 advanced nuclear power plant. Working within a multidisciplinary engineering team, this role is responsible for developing and coordinating cable routing and raceway designs for electrical power, instrumentation & controls (I&C), and communications systems. The engineer will utilize 3D design tools to create and maintain cable tray and conduit layouts, support penetration and interface coordination, perform routing studies, and develop engineering deliverables that ensure compliance with project requirements, constructability needs, and applicable engineering standards. This position offers the opportunity to contribute to the design and licensing of next-generation nuclear technology while collaborating with civil, structural, mechanical, piping, HVAC, systems engineering, and construction teams throughout the project lifecycle.
Location: This position may be based in Buchanan, NY; Camden, NJ; Covert, MI; or North Pittsburgh, PA.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Support cable routing design for the SMR-300 plant across electrical power, I&C, and communications systems.
- Develop and maintain cable routing and raceway layouts in accordance with project criteria, design inputs, separation requirements, fire area considerations, constructability, and maintainability needs.
- Execute raceway design activities including cable tray and conduit layout, routing studies, routing constraints, and installation considerations.
- Prepare raceway sizing inputs, including tray fill inputs, conduit sizing inputs, routing quantities, and support needs as required by the project workflow.
- Support penetration coordination, including identifying routing paths, developing proposed locations, and coordinating with civil/structural and other disciplines.
- Prepare routing deliverables such as routing layouts, design notes/details, routing reports, model-based outputs, and design change documentation.
- Perform cable routing and raceway layout work in SmartPlant 3D (SP3D) or similar 3D plant design tools.
- Participate in model reviews and support resolution of clashes, congestion, and routing conflicts.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, or closely related discipline, from an ABET-accredited college or university.
- 5–7 years of progressive experience in electrical engineering design, with experience supporting cable routing, raceway design, or related plant design activities.
- Working knowledge of engineering practices relevant to cable routing and raceway design, including routing separation concepts, cable tray/conduit practices, grounding/bonding concepts, fire protection interfaces, and constructability considerations.
- Experience working in a 3D plant design environment.
- Ability to prepare clear engineering deliverables, resolve technical comments, and support interdisciplinary coordination.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively with multi-disciplinary engineering teams.
- Nuclear project experience or experience working in a regulated design environment with formal design controls, QA expectations, traceability, and design reviews preferred.
- Experience coordinating routing or penetration interfaces with civil/structural, mechanical, piping/HVAC, I&C, and systems engineering preferred.
- Experience supporting procurement or vendor submittal reviews that impact routing/raceway design, equipment interfaces, installation constraints, or vendor routing limitations.
- Experience supporting construction execution, including walkdowns, constructability reviews, field change support, or installation sequencing coordination.
- Familiarity with related tools and workflows often used with SP3D delivery, including model review tools, cable schedule databases, configuration management, and document control processes.
- Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or interest in pursuing Professional Engineer licensure.
